Mapmaker:
Johann Heinrich von Mädler (Berlin, May 29, 1794 - Hanover, March 14, 1874) was a German astronomer. At the age of 19, having died parents, he was forced to support his three younger sisters by giving private lessons. Because of this work he met in 1824 the wealthy banker and astronomy enthusiast Wilhelm Beer who in 1829, having decided to build a private astronomical observatory in Berlin, hired him to work at the same observatory. In 1830, together with Beer he began to draw up a map of the planet Mars deciding to choose as the prime meridian of Mars what is now called Sinus Meridiani. He calculated the rotation period of Mars first with an error of 11 seconds and then in 1837 with an error of 1.1 seconds. Also together with Beer he produced a map of the Moon - Mappa Selenographica - published in four volumes between 1834 and 1836 and a description of the Moon - Der Mond - both considered to be the best until Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt's map was published. in the 70s of the 19th century. In 1836 he was called by Johann Franz Encke as an observer at the Berlin Observatory. In 1840 he became director of the Tartu Observatory in Estonia, then part of the Russian Empire, succeeding Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve and where he remained until his retirement in 1865. Back in Germany he worked on the completion of the text Geschichte der Himmelskunde von der ältesten bis auf die neueste Zeit published in two volumes in 1873.nThe UAI named the lunar crater Mädler and the Martian crater Mädler after Johann Heinrich Mädler.
